Local music is always a shot in the dark. Sometimes your mind is blown away by the creativity of these by-night musicians, and other times you see why they are local acts. I have to say that yesterday’s bands gave me one of those mind blowing days. Riley and I drove over to the Whiskey Bar for two shows put on by Seminiferous and TripSitter.
Whiskey Bar is a great place for an intimate show. It has that “cozy” feel with dark panel walls, plush white couches, and a 12-foot fireplace. This setting fit well with the acoustic guitars of the bands. “So what do you have on tap” Nothing! Whiskey bars dont have beer. The beautiful waitresses are always a plus as well.
Yesterday was Seminiferouss CD release party for “Naughty One”, and they started off first with some cuts from it. They played for about an hour, mixing new and previous material. I almost started laughing when they played “A Pirates Life for Me”, as my affinity for pirates makes me break into spontaneous laughter whenever the p-bomb is brought up. It was also a treat to hear “She Said” live.
TripSitter started their set out with a They Might be Giants tribute, done surprisingly well! I had “Kiss Me, Son of God” in my head for the next few days. The five members of the band are in essence the combination of the Beach Boys with Queen. I have to acknowledge Jared’s chops, his guitar playing is very intense and passionate. The band played mostly original music and some Beach Boy b-sides that they may have well as written, as the crowd did not know them. Overall a grand show.
